Finally found the time to upload information about some gadgets we developed last year, the Earworm Assault Devices (EAD). The devices were developed under the umbrella of the Earworm Farm project for the CyNetArt Desden with generous support by the Ministry of Science and Arts, Saxony. They were presented at CyNetArt 05 – fragile in the Hygiene Museum Dresden together with Roman Kirschner’s EarwormCollider.

It’s already over and we do not really have any details, but that’s just the way Tomohiro Okada does things. Anyway, he even translated our tension-rising warning sign:
PainStation Warnings in Japanese

During the opening of the annual Rohkunstbau exhibition (for which we developed Mr. Punch in 2005) a benefit auction was held this year. Even though we are totally impoverished media artists, we generously donated two of our rare PainStation Shirts that we are not allowed to produce anymore due to legal issues with Sony Entertainment Corporation Europe Ltd.. To our own suprise, the final bid for the shirts was as high as 300 Euros. Damn, if only we had sold them underhand – i’d be able to buy my kid new diapers now…
Anyway, here’s the auctions leporello in german if you are interested: Rohkunstbau Auktionsleporello.pdf

Life as a media artist is hard and spoiling. After hours on the road driving our trucks stuffed up with tones of high quality media art we reached the diamond city called Antwerp. With the help of our new staff member “roadie of the year” Malle the setup was done right in time.

Look!!! We didn’t know this! Our wildest dreams came true: three fabulously highly entertaining art machines exhibited at the same time in the same room. Don’t miss the opportuninty to check out the future of gaming experience. Come on my friend don’t be shy!

the ////furminator- a geek magnet!

A gamer’s Paradise – Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft presenting their latest games and consoles.

It’s service time – Mr. Punch has a will of it’s own.

It’s showtime! Dj Volle and MC Malle on the tables!

Gamezone organiser Teun and Marc making a clean sweep at the painsstation.

For the fist time ever we’ll be showing three of our favorite game installations at one festival: PainStation, ////furminator and Mr. Punch will be at the Gamezone DeSingel in Antwerp, Belgium. If you live anywhere near, this is the ultimate chance to experience our furry flavor!
Location:DeSingel Art Center, Antwerp

We love Japan, Japan loves PainSutatiaaahn!!!
The Electrical Fantasista Exhibition design is quite extravagant: the whole floor is covered with white foam plastic and visitors have to take off their shoes to enter.

The problem however is that by walking around people get electrostatically charged up and whenever they touch any conducting material this energy is discharged with a nasty spark. Unfortunately the stainless steel PainExecutionUnits of PainStation are attracting these electrostatic discharges (ESD) like shit does flies and our homebrew electronics couldnt take as much of these shocks as they are dishing out: yesterday a transistor was blown and PainStation started to run amok.
So instead of going to Tokyo to shop for more electronic components, we had to find a way to discharge people before touching our precious invention. In the end we got rid of the foam around PS and replaced it with a metal mesh that we connected to the water pipe in the bathroom. It works great now, but its amazing that just when you thought you are prepared for any possible failure of your artpiece a new challenge comes up. An advice to all people thinking about doing media art: stick to video art. All you have to do is burn a DVD!

Tomorrow is the offical opening party! Make sure to reload for some pain deformed japanese faces!
On our way to the openig ceremony of the Japan Media Arts Festival we went up Ebisu Building to get a nice view of Tokyo from the 39th floor.

On the way back home, with our bellies filled with sushi and beer (the buffet was the most spectacular ever!), we went up again to get the same view by night.

You all know that Japan is the wonderland of gadgetry, but its also nice to shop for small electronic parts because you get them all presented like vegetables in tiny booth inside cavelike buildings.
Our artist fee was cut due to budget shortage..but who needs monez anyway? we do have our own ways to survive!

Yokohama doesnt seem to be the most exciting city, but it has some nice views (at least at night)!

Heres a shot of our genetically engineered whip-farm. the whips are almost ripe for harvest!

just so you can get a glimpse of how hard our blogging-circumstances are: tiny laptop and this stupid guy right in front of me. if our rooms werent equipped with sake-heating-plates this would be unbearable..

Tomorrow we will head to tokyo for the opening of Japan Media Arts Festival!
